All courses sponsored by the D.C. Bar, ABA, or TRT have been accredited nationwide by every jurisdiction that had a mandatory CLE requirement at the time of the presentation. 2024 CLE Presentations Trustworthy? Ethical Handling of Prepaid Fees and Settlement Proceeds, presented by Dan Schumack. This class will be live streamed throughout 2024 via TRT CLE. Hot Topics from the Ethics Hotline, by Dan Schumack and Hope Todd. This in-person class at the D.C. Bar's annual Practice 360 Symposium covered ethical risks associated with the contracts that lawyers use in their practices. This October 2024 CLE was multistate accredited for 1.5 ethics hours. Tri-State Ethics Confusion: Differences Among the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virigina Rules, by Tom Mason with Dan Schumack, sponsored by the D.C. Bar CLE Program. Tom Mason created the first installment of this periodically recurring course. Mason and Schumack presented updated versions of this course in September 2024, June 2023, September 2021, April 2018, September 2016, September 2015, and May 2012. Each iteration has been multi-state accredited for 2.0 credit hours. Substance Abuse and Depression in the Legal Profession, sponsored by the D.C. Bar CLE Program. This is a recurring program with periodic changes in course title, content, and faculty. Dan Schumack was on the panel in June 2024, June 2023, March 2021, September 2019, June 2018, June and December 2017, and June 2015. Course content includes a focus on diagnosis, treatment, and how the disciplinary system handles misconduct emerging out of impairment. Each iteration has been multi-state accredited for 2.0 or 3.0 credit hours, depending on program agenda. Selected Other Recent CLE Presentations 2023-Oct. This live program was accredited in Virginia for one ethics hour. 2023-Oct. When Ignorance of the Law (and Ethics Rules) Means Losing Your License! at the D.C. Bar's October 2023 Practice 360 Symposium, presented by Dan Schumack and D.C. Bar Ethics Hotline ethics gurus Erika Stillabower and Hope Todd. This in-person class covered ethical risks associated with prepaid fees, service as local counsel, and virtual lawyering. This class was multi-state accredited for 1.5 ethics hours. 2023-Sept. When Your Client Has Mental Health Issues, presented by Seth Guggenheim in September 2023 at the annual LSNV Pro Bono Reception. This in-person class was accredited in Virginia for one ethics hour. 2022-Dec. "I'm the Best Lawyer in Town" -- And Other Things You Can't Say (Ethically) When Branding or Marketing Your Law Firm, by Dan Schumack, sponsored by the D.C. Bar CLE Program. This December 2022 live streamed class was multi-state accredited for 1.0 ethics hour. 2022-Sept. Great Ways to Get Paid (Without Losing Your Law License), presented by Dan Schumack and Seth Guggenheim, live-streamed from the D.C. Bar's September 2022 Practice 360 Symposium. This live-streamed course was multi-state accredited for 2.0 ethics hours and included ethical requirements for receipt of electronic payments, crypto currency, or an interest in the client's business or other property; together with the communication, billing, and collection events that tend to trigger non-payment, bar complaints, or malpractice claims. 2022-Feb. Fee Agreements and Managing Money, sponsored by the Maryland State Bar Association and live-streamed in February 2022. This 3.0 credit hour course was created by D.C. Bar Practice Managers Dan Mills and Kaitlin Foster McGee, who invited Dan Schumack to join them on the panel for this installment. 2021-Dec. Virtual Lawyering: Keeping the U out of UPL, presented by Dan Schumack in December 2021. This live-streamed course hosted by the D.C. Bar CLE Program addressed Unauthorized Practice of Law disciplinary risks to D.C., Maryland, and Virginia lawyers who do their work over the internet from (or to) locations where they are not licensed. This course was multi-state accredited for 1.5 ethics CLE credits. 2020-June. Everything You Wanted to Know About the Disciplinary System But May Have Been Afraid to Ask presented by Dan Schumack and D.C. Bar Deputy Disciplinary Counsel Julia Porter.
